CourseIntroduction

Populismhas been a worldwide phenomenon, ranging from the Brexit to Trump, but thedefinitions of populism vary. In this course, we will use the definition set byCas Mudde and Cristobal Rovira Kaltwasser. Simply said, populism is a polarizingideology, which dichotomizes people in two camps: the “pure people” versus the “corruptelite.” Populism is also a backlash against globalization as it is highlyreliant on a regressive illusion of collective identity, regarding nationalpride, races and genders.

Inthe making of American national identity, author Michael Kammen points out, inhis Pulitzer-winning book People of Paradox, Americans differentiate themselvesfrom their English forefathers through numerous self-imposed contradictionslike individualism/collectivism. Americans value individuality but build theirself-worth in the social good. For example, cowboys always work alone but theyfeel obliged to defend their community against the villains. The hero must be aself-reliant loner who leaves for the wilderness after putting the town inorder. Americans pride themselves on their egalitarian beliefs that all men areborn equal in a class-free society. Unlike the English, America has no royalfamily and social classes in America are relatively mobile. Liberty and hardwork define the American Dream.

However,Nancy Isenberg proposes an iconoclastic view in her book White Trash: The400-Year Untold History of Class in America. Isenberg reveals the legacy ofwhite underclass people (her so-called “white trash”), which was inherited fromthe early English colonizers of North America, who invented this immobile classconcept to facilitate the commerce among the American elites. All that can befound in Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind (1936), which is full ofderogatory depictions of poor whites in the Old South. The protagonist ScarlettO’Hara is practically the epitome of American Protestant individualism: one’sself-respect relies on the bread he/she is able to put on the table. Scarlettabandons her collective identity, represented by the Confederate Old Southconventions, to attain commercial success for herself. Scarlett’s character isliterally the personification of Ayn Rand’s “virtue of selfishness.” Randcelebrates libertarianism (neoliberalism) with her glorification of theself-reliant man who needs no social welfare to sustain and prosper.

Inthis course, we will look into the populist concepts of gender, race, self andsociety in several selected pieces of English/American popular literature. Wemay see the dynamics of binary genders in Ian Fleming’s short story “Quantum ofSolace” (James Bond) and Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead (1943), where romance andrape are feebly distinguished. As to the American cowboy literature, we willguide the students to read the first western novel Riders of the Purple Sage(1912) as well as the recent western crime fiction No Country for Old Men(2005) so we can understand the change of time in the Wild West of America.

CourseObjectives

Thiscourse is designed for students to catch up with our time. Populism is said tobe the enemy of democracy. Instead of relentless bombardments, we must hold acomparatively empathetic attitude towards such worldwide phenomena so we cangather together to create a future that is anything but polarizing as oursociety might become anything but hostile.
